Should You Believe the Real Estate Headlines?

Behind the Headlines Kristin Zaben July 13, 2026

If you've been following the news lately, you've probably noticed one thing...

The real estate headlines seem to change every week.

One day it's:
"Now's the perfect time to buy!"

The next day it's:
"Wait until interest rates come down."

Or maybe you hear someone say home prices are crashing while someone else insists it's still a seller's market.

It's no wonder so many people feel confused.

The Truth About Real Estate Headlines

Here's something I tell my clients all the time:

Real estate is local.

National headlines are designed to summarize what's happening across the entire country. But they don't always reflect what's happening in your neighborhood—or even your city.

The Bakersfield market has its own trends, inventory levels, pricing, and buyer demand. That's why I encourage my clients to focus on what's happening here rather than making decisions based solely on national news.

So... Is Now a Good Time to Buy or Sell?

The honest answer is...

It depends on your goals.

Every buyer and seller has a different situation.

Maybe your family is growing and you've outgrown your current home.

Maybe you're ready to downsize and simplify.

Maybe you're relocating for work.

The "right" time isn't determined by a headline. It's determined by your goals, your finances, and what makes sense for your family.

What I'm Seeing Here in Bakersfield

One of the reasons I'm so passionate about our local market is because Bakersfield continues to offer something that's becoming harder and harder to find in California—affordability.

Compared to many other parts of the state, buyers can often find more home, more yard, and more value for their money here. Whether they're relocating from Southern California, the Bay Area, or another higher-cost market, many are surprised by what's possible in Bakersfield.

That affordability continues to attract buyers who are looking for a better quality of life, more space for their families, or simply an opportunity to become homeowners.

Let's Keep the Conversation Going

One of the reasons I started my weekly Market Monday series is because I want to answer the questions that matter most to our local community.

Instead of simply sharing statistics, I'd rather help explain what those numbers actually mean for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Bakersfield real estate market slowing down?

The market has become more balanced compared to the rapid pace of previous years, but well-priced homes continue to attract buyers. Conditions can vary depending on the neighborhood, price range, and property type.

Should I wait to buy a home?

There's no one-size-fits-all answer. The best time to buy depends on your personal goals, finances, and housing needs—not just what's happening in national headlines.

Are home prices dropping in Bakersfield?

Home values can vary by neighborhood and price range. Looking at local market data provides a much clearer picture than relying on national reports alone.
